The journaling workshop entitled "Building Your Visual Journal from the Page Up" features instructor Roz Stendahl. This free workshop starts May 1, 2011. If you haven't registered already, you can register now and get immediate access to the classroom and supply lists.
Through video lessons and instruction sheets, Roz will help students find their unique visual style while creating mixed media journal pages from the background up. Topics include how to execute colorful and textured backgrounds with paints and inks; work with collage papers and ephemera to explore composition; and master paper handling techniques that expand your page and enhance your journal's flow.
Lastly, Roz shows you how to take your journal into the real world to hone your on-site sketching and observation skills. The techniques and strategies presented in this workshop will enable you to discover your own authentic journal voice and unleash your creative energy.
Strathmore Artist Papers Earns Award for Innovation
Strathmore Artist Papers was awarded the 2011 Business Innovation Award at the Art Materials World trade show and convention in Phoenix on April 14 for its Visual Journal Online Workshop Series.
The series of free online workshops were launched as part of a consumer promotion and to support the introduction of Strathmore's Visual Journals. Each workshop is taught by an experienced visual journaling instructor and includes instructional videos, downloadable instruction sheets and inspirational ideas and tips.
"Our vision is to deliver both the educational and social benefits of learning, in an online classroom environment," explains Jeanette Gile, Marketing Manager and Workshop Coordinator. "There are more than 6,800 students and the number is growing daily. The class is extremely active and supportive of one another. Students are sharing the results of lessons, exchanging information, socializing and creating new friendships." Workshops will continue through August 1, 2011.
The Business Innovation Award recognizes individuals and businesses that innovate in the art materials industry and is sponsored by the International Art Materials Trade Association (NAMTA), American Artist magazine and Hart Business Research. Strathmore also received the Business Innovation Award in 2010 for its new product launch of Strathmore Visual Journals.
Strathmore collaborated with art instructors Pam Carriker, Linda Blinn and Roz Stendahl, and Stevens 470 Marketing & Creative to develop the online workshops.
Journals for Everything!
By Visual Journal Instructor Linda Blinn
Once you start a visual journal you will see the possibilities for individual journals that focus on one topic: for instance, a color journal. Any size of Strathmore Visual Journals with watercolor or mixed media paper provides a perfect format for mixing and testing colors and creating color combinations for future projects.
Other topics for journals include those that focus on the kitchen or the outdoors.
Kitchen Journal
A kitchen is often the most interactive area of a home and keeping a kitchen journal enables you to record the rituals of daily life. Capture life in small details: a sketch of a chair, a graphic label from a bottle of olive oil or a family recipe.
Nature Journal
This fosters quiet introspection as you slow down to observe the subtleties outside. Watercolor, sketching, leaf printing, pressing flowers and collecting stones, shells, pods and moss result in beautiful tactile pages.

Artful Letterforms
By Visual Journal Instructor Linda Blinn
Eye-catching art can be created using letters, fonts and words, and since journals are all about the words, you might as well turn them into art!
For inspiration, select Google Images link in Google search engine and search for “letterforms.” You will see fabulous samples of what graphic artists do with this concept.
For the collage above, I made a grid background with vintage ephemera and used four different techniques for the letters which were then attached to the background with gel medium. Top left: transparent acrylic on a dictionary page top right: gel painted with acrylics bottom left: tissue paper covered with gel medium to stiffen, then painted with acrylics bottom right: page from a books painted with acrylics.
